Holiday ham. Everyone loves it. But not everyone knows the right way to cook it. So here are the basics to getting the juicy-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside, smoky, savory ham of everyone’s holiday dreams.
LINE UP FOR EASY CLEANUP
For simple cleanup, line your roasting pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
PERFECT BY DEGREE
For the juiciest holiday ham, cook at 325ºF. For boneless ham cook for 12-15 minutes per pound, for bone-in or spiral cut cook for 15-20 minutes per pound.
BASTE LIKE THE BEST OF ‘EM
If your ham has one, roast with the fat side up. The melting fat will baste your ham as it cooks.
For a juicy, even cook, cover your ham loosely with aluminum foil while cooking.
THE CLASSIC 30-MINUTE CRISP
For a crisp exterior, uncover your ham during the last 30 minutes of cooking. (This is also a good time for glazing.)
Always cook your ham to an internal temperature of at least 145ºF, just to be safe.
LET IT STAND
Let your ham stand for 15 minutes before slicing. Then the inside will continue to cook while the outside cools, making it easier to carve.
